Overview
A Father's Journey is a platform action RPG game where the player takes on the role of a father who has to journey through the slums of a city to bring his daughter to school. The game is set in a dystopian world where poverty and crime are rampant, and the slums are filled with dangerous obstacles, enemies, and challenges. This game was made to highlight SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities & Communities

The Challenge
Learning Unity from scratch was a significant challenge, as I had no prior experience with the engine, nor was it covered in my module. Understanding how to program and design a game in a completely new environment presented a steep learning curve. Additionally, I had never worked with pixel art before, which made it difficult to create assets that matched the game’s aesthetic. Balancing quality and consistency while developing visuals that fit the project added another layer of complexity.
The Solution
To overcome these challenges, I relied heavily on online tutorials, forums, and community guides to teach myself Unity. Through trial and error, I learned programming basics, implemented game mechanics, and optimized the gameplay experience step by step. For the pixel art, I researched techniques and used available assets as a foundation, customizing them to align with the game’s narrative and style. This approach allowed me to focus on the creative aspects of the project without being overwhelmed by the technical demands of creating everything from scratch.
