This project addresses this gap by introducing three Southeast Asian-inspired Overwatch characters and a hybrid map that authentically showcases the landscapes, cultures, and stories of the region. Each character and environment blends Southeast Asian heritage with Overwatch’s futuristic aesthetic, creating a unique and immersive gaming experience.

The Challenge
Representing Southeast Asian cultures authentically without falling into stereotypes, while blending traditional motifs with Overwatch’s futuristic aesthetic, posed a significant creative challenge. The lack of existing Southeast Asian representation in mainstream games further limited references, making it difficult to strike a balance between cultural accuracy and innovation.
The Solution
Conducted in-depth research into the histories, traditions, and stories of Southeast Asia, consulting cultural experts and local communities for authenticity. Symbolic representation was emphasized, incorporating traditional patterns and motifs into modern designs, such as futuristic armor inspired by traditional attire. Leveraged a wide variety of resources like historical archives, folk art, and local crafts to craft unique and respectful representations. Iterative design processes helped refine the balance between cultural authenticity and Overwatch’s signature sci-fi aesthetic.
